Channel is not a trivial decision
Most buying advice stops at the product. But a griddle is a gas appliance with consumable parts — burners corrode, regulators fail, igniters stop igniting, cooktops warp — and where you bought it determines how easy any of that is to fix.
What changes by channel
Exclusives
Some griddles are tied to one retailer. Member’s Mark is a Sam’s Club exclusive, and plenty of brands run retailer-specific variants — which is one reason the same model name appears with different BTU ratings at different stores.
An exclusive means warranty service runs through that channel, and if your relationship with it ends — a lapsed membership, a closed local store — support gets harder.
Parts availability
This is the real long-term differentiator and it tracks brand more than retailer. Blackstone sizes have the deepest parts and accessory market by a wide margin: burners, regulators, cooktops, hoods, covers, from the manufacturer and from a large third-party ecosystem.
Smaller brands — Halo, LoCo, Nexgrill, Royal Gourmet — have thinner support. That does not make them bad griddles; it makes them griddles with a shorter practical life if something breaks.
Variant confusion
Retailer-specific SKUs are rife in this category. The same body appears with different BTU ratings, different included accessories and different model numbers. Pit Boss sells 748 and 753 square inch variants of the Deluxe; Blackstone’s 28″ XL ships at three different BTU ratings.
Always read the spec panel on the listing in front of you rather than relying on the model name. Our main roundup flags every model where we found listings disagreeing.
A pre-purchase checklist
- Read the BTU and cooking area off the listing, not the model name.
- Check a cover exists for that exact model, including hood configuration. This is where exclusives bite first.
- Find the parts page before buying. If you cannot find where to order a replacement burner, that is your answer about year five.
- Check the warranty length and who honors it — manufacturer or retailer.
- Confirm what is in the box. Hood or no hood, hard cover or not, and whether a regulator and hose are included.
The used market
Griddles hold up well second-hand, with two caveats specific to this category.
First, check the cooktop for warping, which is permanent and makes grease drainage a lifelong irritation — see warping. Rust is cosmetic by comparison and entirely fixable.
Second, check hood and accessory mounts against the current model year. Mounting patterns change between generations, so a used hood or hard cover may not fit a griddle that otherwise looks identical.
The picks in detail
Specifications are linked to their source on every card. Scores are ours, derived from those specifications.

#1 · Most households
Blackstone 28" Original Griddle
The size most people should actually buy: 525 square inches and two zones covers a family of four with headroom, on a footprint that fits a normal patio.
#ad We publish no prices: there is no verified price feed on this site, so the retailer’s page is the only price. How this is funded
Key specifications
- Cooking area
- 525 sq in (28¾ × 18¼ in)
- Burners
- 2, stainless H-burners
- Total output
- 34,000 BTU
- Cooktop
- 10-gauge rolled carbon steel
- Ignition
- Piezo
- Zones
- 2, independently controlled
Specifications from BBQGuys spec sheet.
Scores
- Cooking area7.5
- Heat output7.0
- Zone control7.0
- Surface care6.5
- Portability5.0
What works
- The 10-gauge plate is thicker than most griddles at this size, which is what keeps temperature steady when cold food hits it
- Two zones is genuinely enough: one hot side for searing, one moderate side for holding
- Fits a standard patio and a standard cover, which the 36 often does not
What to know
- Only two zones — you cannot run a dedicated warming zone and two cooking temperatures at once
- 34,000 BTU over 525 sq in is modest heat density; recovery after a big load is slower than the 36
- Bare carbon steel needs seasoning and a cover, same as every Blackstone

#2 · Club-store buyers
Member's Mark 4-Burner 36" Griddle
720 square inches with 304 stainless burners — a credible large griddle, sold in two BTU ratings that are easy to confuse.
#ad We publish no prices: there is no verified price feed on this site, so the retailer’s page is the only price. How this is funded
Key specifications
- Cooking area
- 720 sq in
- Burners
- 4, 304 stainless steel
- Total output
- 48,000 or 60,000 BTU depending on model
- Cooktop
- Steel
- Ignition
- All-weather electronic
- Sold at
- Sam's Club
Specifications from Sam's Club listing.
Listings disagree: Sold at both 48,000 BTU and 60,000 BTU with the same 720 sq in surface. Read the BTU figure off the box.
Scores
- Cooking area9.0
- Heat output7.5
- Zone control9.5
- Surface care6.5
- Portability3.0
What works
- 304 stainless burners are a better grade than several pricier griddles use
- All-weather electronic ignition, which is the part that usually fails first
- 720 sq in is real 36-inch-class surface
What to know
- Two different BTU ratings (48,000 and 60,000) ship at the same 720 sq in — a 25% heat difference you have to catch on the label
- Club-store exclusivity makes parts and warranty harder outside that channel
- Thin third-party accessory support compared with Blackstone sizes

#3 · Blackstone 36 output for less money
Nexgrill Daytona 4-Burner Griddle
756 square inches and 60,000 BTU — the same heat and nearly the same surface as a Blackstone 36, from a brand with a smaller accessory ecosystem.
#ad We publish no prices: there is no verified price feed on this site, so the retailer’s page is the only price. How this is funded
Key specifications
- Cooking area
- 756 sq in
- Burners
- 4 × 15,000 BTU, stainless
- Total output
- 60,000 BTU
- Cooktop
- Steel
- Lid
- Stainless steel
- Panel
- Stainless control panel
Specifications from Nexgrill product page.
Scores
- Cooking area9.5
- Heat output9.5
- Zone control9.5
- Surface care6.5
- Portability3.0
What works
- 79.4 BTU per square inch matches the Blackstone 36 almost exactly
- Even 15,000 BTU burners — no weak zone
- Stainless lid and control panel at a size where rivals use painted steel
What to know
- Far fewer first-party accessories and spares than Blackstone
- 13 sq in less surface than a Blackstone 36 for the same burner count
- Sold mainly through a small number of retailers, which complicates warranty and parts

#4 · People who want a grill and a griddle
Camp Chef Flat Top Grill 600
604 square inches as a griddle, 501 as a grill — the only unit here that converts properly rather than pretending a griddle plate is a grill.
#ad We publish no prices: there is no verified price feed on this site, so the retailer’s page is the only price. How this is funded
Key specifications
- Griddle area
- 604 sq in
- Grill area
- 501 sq in
- Burners
- 4 × 12,000 BTU
- Total output
- 48,000 BTU
- Cooktop
- Pre-seasoned cold-rolled steel
- Dimensions
- 62.5 × 37 × 22 in
Specifications from BBQGuys spec sheet.
Scores
- Cooking area8.0
- Heat output9.5
- Zone control9.0
- Surface care7.0
- Portability3.5
What works
- Genuinely does both jobs — the grill grates are real grates, not a ridged plate
- Even 12,000 BTU per burner means the zones are matched rather than lopsided
- Pre-seasoned cold-rolled steel out of the box
What to know
- You lose 103 sq in when you convert to grill mode
- More parts to store than a dedicated griddle
- 79.5 BTU per sq in is strong, but only with all four burners lit
