Why electric genuinely wins here
Pancakes need a moderate, even, stable temperature — around 350–375 °F — held for the whole batch. They do not need searing heat, and they punish uneven heat visibly: one pale pancake and one scorched one from the same batch.
That is exactly the opposite of what gas griddles are optimized for, and exactly what an electric griddle does well:
- Thermostatic control. You set a temperature and the griddle holds it, instead of you learning where “medium” is on a particular valve.
- Even element distribution. A resistive element laid out across the plate heats more uniformly than two or four discrete gas burners under a continuous steel plate.
- No wind. Indoors, the plate holds whatever temperature it reached.
- The power ceiling does not matter. 1500 watts is plenty for 375 °F.
The electric-versus-gas trade disappears entirely for this cook.
The temperature
350–375 °F.
Hotter and the outside colors before the middle sets, which is the classic raw-centered pancake with a dark face. Cooler and they dry out before browning, giving a pale, tough result.
If your griddle has a dial rather than numbers, the water-droplet test works: a drop should dance and skitter for a couple of seconds before evaporating. Instantly gone means too hot; a slow sizzle means too cool. Full temperature chart.
Technique for an even batch
- Preheat properly. Give it a full ten minutes. Most unevenness is a griddle that was not up to temperature when the first ladle went down.
- Barely grease it. A non-stick surface needs very little, and excess butter browns and leaves a mottled face. Wipe a thin film on rather than melting butter in a pool.
- Ladle consistently. Same volume each time means the same cooking time.
- Flip on the bubbles. When bubbles form across the surface and the edges look set, not before.
- Once. Repeated flipping compresses the crumb.
- Expect the first one to be a test. It always is, on every griddle ever made.
Which of these two
The Presto 07061 for a family. 22 inches of ceramic surface is a lot of pancakes at once, and the detachable handles mean it fits in a cupboard rather than living in the basement — which decides whether you actually use it.
The Zojirushi EA-DCC10 for fewer people and more control. 19 × 12½ inches is a smaller surface, but the 176 °F Keep Warm setting means finished pancakes hold at serving temperature without continuing to cook, which on a long batch is genuinely useful.
What about doing pancakes on a gas griddle?
Perfectly possible, and the large surface means you can cook a lot at once. It is harder to keep even, because you are managing valve positions against hot spots rather than setting a number.
If you do, an infrared thermometer and a hot-spot map are the two things that close most of the gap — or a thermostatically controlled gas griddle, which is the only one in our guide that works like an electric for this purpose.
The picks in detail
Specifications are linked to their source on every card. Scores are ours, derived from those specifications.

#1 · Family breakfasts indoors
Presto 07061 Ceramic 22" Electric Griddle
A 1500 W, 22-inch ceramic griddle whose handles come off so it fits a standard 18-inch cabinet — the storage problem solved properly.

Key specifications
- Power
- 1500 W
- Surface
- 22 in, PFAS-free textured ceramic
- Base
- Heavy cast aluminum
- Cleaning
- Fully immersible with the heat control removed
- Storage
- Detachable handles; fits most 18 in cabinets
- Control
- Control Master automatic heat control
Specifications from Walmart listing.
Scores
- Cooking area6.0
- Heat output4.0
- Zone control3.0
- Surface care8.5
- Portability8.0
What works
- The detachable handles are not a gimmick — storage is the reason most electric griddles end up in a basement
- Fully immersible once the control is off, which no gas griddle can offer
- PFAS-free ceramic rather than a conventional non-stick coating
What to know
- 1500 W is the ceiling for a standard US outlet — no electric griddle sears like a propane one
- Ceramic is a wear surface; it will not outlive a steel top
- Cast aluminum spreads heat well but holds far less of it than 10-gauge steel

#2 · Table cooking and precise low heat
Zojirushi EA-DCC10 Gourmet Sizzler
1,350 W over a 19 × 12½-inch titanium-ceramic plate with a Keep Warm setting at 176 °F — built for cooking at the table, not for searing.
#ad We publish no prices: there is no verified price feed on this site, so the retailer’s page is the only price. How this is funded
Key specifications
- Power
- 1,350 W at 120 V
- Cooking surface
- 19 × 12½ in
- Overall
- 23⅝ × 15 × 4⅜ in
- Surface
- Titanium- and ceramic-enhanced triple-layer non-stick

Specifications from Zojirushi product page.
Scores
- Cooking area4.5
- Heat output3.5
- Zone control5.0
- Surface care9.0
- Portability7.5
What works
- A real 176 °F Keep Warm setting — most electric griddles bottom out far higher
- Triple-layer titanium-ceramic coating is more durable than single-layer non-stick
- Designed to live on the table, which is a genuinely different use case from a counter appliance
What to know
- 1,350 W is lower than the Presto's 1500 W, and the 425 °F ceiling is low for searing
- 237 sq in of surface is small for a family
- Priced as a premium appliance for performance that is deliberately gentle
