Electric vs gas griddle
A standard outlet caps an electric griddle at about a third of the smallest gas griddle's heat. Everything follows from that.

The number that decides everything
A standard US household circuit gives an appliance roughly 1500 watts, which is about 5,100 BTU per hour of equivalent heat.
The smallest gas griddle in our guide — a single-burner 17-inch tabletop — produces 12,500 BTU. A Blackstone 28 produces 34,000.
So an electric griddle has roughly 40% of the heat of the smallest gas griddle you can buy, and about 15% of a mid-size one. That is not a flaw in any product. It is the wall, and no electric griddle gets past it.
What that means in practice
Electric griddles are good at everything at or below about 400 °F across a broad surface: pancakes, eggs, bacon, grilled sandwiches, quesadillas, breakfast for six at once.
They are poor at anything needing a hard sear and fast recovery. Put six cold patties on a 1500-watt plate and the surface temperature falls further and recovers more slowly than on any gas griddle, which is why a true smash-burger crust is genuinely difficult.
What electric genuinely does better
- Indoors. Gas griddles cannot be used indoors, ever — see the safety page. If you have no outdoor space, this is not a comparison, it is the only option.
- Thermostatic control. You set a temperature and get it, with no knob positions to learn.
- A genuine low setting. The Zojirushi holds Keep Warm at 176 °F. The Traeger Flatrock’s stated range bottoms out at 350 °F.
- Cleaning. Many electric griddles are fully immersible once the control is removed. No gas griddle is.
- No fuel logistics. No tanks, no running out mid-cook, no storage.
- No seasoning and no rust. Coated surfaces, so no maintenance routine.
What gas does better
- Heat, by a factor of three to twelve.
- Recovery under a full load — the thing that decides crust.
- Surface area: 525 to 769 square inches against roughly 220 to 350.
- A restorable steel surface rather than a coating that wears out.
- Real multi-zone staging for a crowd.
The option that beats both indoors
A thick steel plate on a gas range. It inherits the cooktop’s full burner output rather than being capped at 1500 watts, and a 3/8-inch plate has more thermal mass than any freestanding griddle cooktop in our guide.
It is the most capable indoor flat top there is. The constraint becomes your kitchen ventilation rather than your power supply — a flat top produces a lot of smoke.

The picks in detail
Specifications are linked to their source on every card. Scores are ours, derived from those specifications.

#1 · Family breakfasts indoors
Presto 07061 Ceramic 22" Electric Griddle
A 1500 W, 22-inch ceramic griddle whose handles come off so it fits a standard 18-inch cabinet — the storage problem solved properly.
#ad We publish no prices: there is no verified price feed on this site, so the retailer’s page is the only price. How this is funded
Key specifications
- Power
- 1500 W
- Surface
- 22 in, PFAS-free textured ceramic
- Base
- Heavy cast aluminum
- Cleaning
- Fully immersible with the heat control removed
- Storage
- Detachable handles; fits most 18 in cabinets
- Control
- Control Master automatic heat control
Specifications from Walmart listing.
Scores
- Cooking area6.0
- Heat output4.0
- Zone control3.0
- Surface care8.5
- Portability8.0
What works
- The detachable handles are not a gimmick — storage is the reason most electric griddles end up in a basement
- Fully immersible once the control is off, which no gas griddle can offer
- PFAS-free ceramic rather than a conventional non-stick coating
What to know
- 1500 W is the ceiling for a standard US outlet — no electric griddle sears like a propane one
- Ceramic is a wear surface; it will not outlive a steel top
- Cast aluminum spreads heat well but holds far less of it than 10-gauge steel

#2 · Most households
Blackstone 28" Original Griddle
The size most people should actually buy: 525 square inches and two zones covers a family of four with headroom, on a footprint that fits a normal patio.
#ad We publish no prices: there is no verified price feed on this site, so the retailer’s page is the only price. How this is funded
Key specifications
- Cooking area
- 525 sq in (28¾ × 18¼ in)
- Burners
- 2, stainless H-burners
- Total output
- 34,000 BTU
- Cooktop
- 10-gauge rolled carbon steel
- Ignition
- Piezo
- Zones
- 2, independently controlled
Specifications from BBQGuys spec sheet.
Scores
- Cooking area7.5
- Heat output7.0
- Zone control7.0
- Surface care6.5
- Portability5.0
What works
- The 10-gauge plate is thicker than most griddles at this size, which is what keeps temperature steady when cold food hits it
- Two zones is genuinely enough: one hot side for searing, one moderate side for holding
- Fits a standard patio and a standard cover, which the 36 often does not
What to know
- Only two zones — you cannot run a dedicated warming zone and two cooking temperatures at once
- 34,000 BTU over 525 sq in is modest heat density; recovery after a big load is slower than the 36
- Bare carbon steel needs seasoning and a cover, same as every Blackstone

#3 · Table cooking and precise low heat
Zojirushi EA-DCC10 Gourmet Sizzler
1,350 W over a 19 × 12½-inch titanium-ceramic plate with a Keep Warm setting at 176 °F — built for cooking at the table, not for searing.
#ad We publish no prices: there is no verified price feed on this site, so the retailer’s page is the only price. How this is funded
Key specifications
- Power
- 1,350 W at 120 V
- Cooking surface
- 19 × 12½ in
- Overall
- 23⅝ × 15 × 4⅜ in
- Surface
- Titanium- and ceramic-enhanced triple-layer non-stick
- Heat range
- Keep Warm (176 °F) to 425 °F
- Cleaning
- Fully immersible body guard and cooking plate
Specifications from Zojirushi product page.
Scores
- Cooking area4.5
- Heat output3.5
- Zone control5.0
- Surface care9.0
- Portability7.5
What works
- A real 176 °F Keep Warm setting — most electric griddles bottom out far higher
- Triple-layer titanium-ceramic coating is more durable than single-layer non-stick
- Designed to live on the table, which is a genuinely different use case from a counter appliance
What to know
- 1,350 W is lower than the Presto's 1500 W, and the 425 °F ceiling is low for searing
- 237 sq in of surface is small for a family
- Priced as a premium appliance for performance that is deliberately gentle

#4 · A flat top on a kitchen range
Steelmade PRO Series Flat Top (30" range)
3/8-inch steel at roughly 62 lb, sized for a 30-inch gas or electric coil range — a genuine indoor flat top rather than a griddle pan.
#ad We publish no prices: there is no verified price feed on this site, so the retailer’s page is the only price. How this is funded
Key specifications
- Steel thickness
- 3/8 in
- Weight
- ~62.0 lb
- Fits
- 30 in gas or electric coil range
- Surface
- Bare steel — needs seasoning
- Format
- Range-top insert
- Made in
- USA
Specifications from Steelmade product page.
Scores
- Cooking area5.5
- Heat output5.5
- Zone control5.0
- Surface care6.0
- Portability3.0
What works
- 3/8 in is thicker than any freestanding griddle top in this guide — it is the most stable surface here
- Turns an existing range into an indoor flat top without a new appliance or a propane tank
- No outdoor storage, no cover, no weather exposure
What to know
- 62 lb on a range top is a serious load — check your range can take it before buying
- Needs real kitchen ventilation; a flat top produces a lot of smoke
- Covers your burners, so it is the whole cooktop while it is on
